African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR)

Overview

The African Commission was established by the African Charter. The Commission began on 2 November 1987 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Since then, the Secretariat has been located in Banjul, The Gambia.

Officially, the Commission has three primary functions the protection of human and peoples’ rights; the promotion of human and peoples’ rights; and the interpretation of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Additionally, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government (“Assembly”) may allocate tasks to the Commission.

There are 11 members of the Commission, each of whom serves a renewable term of six years. These people are elected by the Assembly from a pool of experts nominated by State Parties to the Charter.
